How to Build a DIY Stock Tank Pool

Written by Jada Meyers

I would often look over at my next-door neighbour's pool and be so envious of it. There was no way we could afford to install a big pool and I hated the look of the above-ground pools. I started doing some research on the internet and I came across stock tank pools. I loved the look of them, how they came in all sizes and I loved the price.

I started looking around to where I can find them in Canada. I ordered the stock tank and it fit in the back of my SUV to get it home. We chose an 8x2x3 galvanized steel stock tank that comes with a plug so it would be easy to fill and empty as well.

We picked a sunny area where we wanted the pool. We prepared the foundation with gravel and patio slabs and then decorative tiles to make it look nice. We wanted to ensure the area was level.

Once we had the tank at home I decided that I wanted to fancy it up a bit. The tank is galvanized steel so I knew it would be able to survive the winter elements outside. I used cleaning strength vinegar to get rid of the oil on the tank and then fine sandpaper to clean it up and rough it up to hold the paint. I then used a metal primer and metal paint to paint it. I made a point to not paint the inside or the outer rim as I don’t think it would have held the paint.

I drilled 2 holes into the side of the tank for the above ground pool pump. I purchased inlet strainers and valves at a local hardware store. We then hooked up the pump to the pool and started filling it up! Once full we use 2 bromine tablets in the dispenser which lasts at least a week.

We decided to make a cover for the pool to keep debris out. We used a screen door material and cut strips of wood which we stained. We then attached knobs on the bottom of the wood so that when it was on the pool it would sit tight. The cover then rolls on and off easily.

We use the pool 3-4 times a week. Our tank fits 2 adults easily with room to spare. The pool takes no time to heat up as well. We use a skimmer and an above ground pool vacuum when needed. We absolutely love our pool!
